چکیده

A species of sea anemone found in shallow water areas of southern Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, but never before reported from Hawaii, is described. It is identified as Actiniogeton sesere, previously recorded and described from the Torres Straits (Haddon and Shackleton 1893). HAWAII'S COELENTERATE FAUNA is poorly known and is in need of serious study. As I have discussed elsewhere (Dunn 1974), the single monographic treatment of shallow water anthozoans of Hawaii (Verrill 1928) is outdated, both because of taxonomic changes and because ofnew findings. In an earlier paper (Dunn 1974), I dealt with the former problem, redescribing a sea anemone that had been given a new specific and generic designation by Verrill, but that had previously been described from Ambon; here I redescribe a species that is not included in Verrill's work. This description is based upon examination of over 50 specimens in the field, eight in aquaria, dissections of five, and histological sections of six others. Nematocyst measurements were made from five different animals. Actiniogeton sesere (Haddon & Shackleton 1893: 126) Actinioides sesere Haddon & Shackleton 1893: 126; Actinioidessesere Haddon 1898: 428; Actiniogeton sesere Carlgren 1949: 62.

Three Species of Intertidal Sea Anemones (Anthozoa: Actiniidae) from the Tropical Pacific: Description of Anthopleura buddemeieri, n. sp., with Remarks on Anthopleura asiatica and Gyractis sesere

A new species of sea anemone, Anthopleura buddemeieri Fautin, is described from Fiji and Papua New Guinea. Occurring high in the intertidal zone, a typical individual has a column rich brown in color and marked with longitudinal rows of red spots. Occurring in the same habitat, at least in Papua New Guinea, is a sea anemone known in the tropical Indo-Pacific from Aden to Hawai‘i, the valid name...

Radianthus papillosa ( Coelenterata , Actiniaria ) Redescribed from Hawaii

The shallow water sea anemone that was described by Verrill (1928) as Macranthea cookei from specimens collected in Hawaii is redescribed and synonymized with Radianthus pqpillosa, first described by Kwietniewski (1898) as Stichodactis papillosa from Ambon. sand flats on Moku 0 Loe (Coconut Island), Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, were studied alive and in preserved condition. To ascertain that the species ...

Hidden among Sea Anemones: The First Comprehensive Phylogenetic Reconstruction of the Order Actiniaria (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Hexacorallia) Reveals a Novel Group of Hexacorals

Sea anemones (order Actiniaria) are among the most diverse and successful members of the anthozoan subclass Hexacorallia, occupying benthic marine habitats across all depths and latitudes. Actiniaria comprises approximately 1,200 species of solitary and skeleton-less polyps and lacks any anatomical synapomorphy. Although monophyly is anticipated based on higher-level molecular phylogenies of Cn...

Phylogenetic signal in mitochondrial and nuclear markers in sea anemones (Cnidaria, Actiniaria).

The mitochondrial genome of basal animals is generally more slowly evolving than that of bilaterians. This difference in rate complicates the study of relationships among members of these lineages and the discovery of cryptic species or the testing of morphological species concepts within them. We explore the properties of mitochondrial and nuclear ribosomal genes in the cnidarian order Actinia...
